stooping

The last post finished with a question, “do I have to constantly remind myself to find my centre of support so I can release tension?”

Well not exactly! Simply reminding yourself to find your centre of support and releasing tension without understanding how and why is one path you may take. It has its limits and I imagine would be rather boring and repetitive -rather like learning historical dates without understanding their context or significance.

In order to change and move easily and effortlessly in the long term, real learning has to take place.  Continue reading

British Medical Journal report on back pain

On Saturday 23rd August 2008 the headline in The Times newspaper read: Back to the Future: Why the Alexander Technique is a must for Back Sufferers.

It refers to a research study reported in the British Medical Journal which showed that patients suffering from chronic back problems improved more effectively after a sequence of classes in the Alexander Technique than other treatments.

Here is the link to the British Medical Journal’s report

Discovery Workshop at Antibes Practice

Every day we move, we walk, sit and carry objects. If we move poorly, we are capable of putting enormous strains and forces on our body. There will be pain and injury -  no doubt about it – especially if our movement habits stretch over a period of years. In fact we move without even registering how we are moving. Only at the end of the day when we suffer from tension headaches or sore knees and backs, do we know that something is up.  Do you ever suspect it may be to do with how you are standing or sitting? If you suspect this is so, what could you do about it?

Come to the

Antibes Discovery  Workshop  Continue reading

Come to the opening!

I was recently invited to join a group of well-being practitioners who are setting up their practice in Antibes.  After meeting this international and highly motivated group of people I was struck by their sincerity and motivation and excited about working in such a team.

Seriousness of Slouching part 2

So is there an in-between state?

If ‘Slouching’ is relaxing to the point when you cannot stand up straight, and ‘standing straight’ requires muscular effort and holding, then is there an ‘in-between’ posture that is correct? Continue reading

The Seriousness of Slouching

Copyright 2011© Julia Gilroy, all rights reserved world-wide

What is slouching? Slouching is effectively turning off your system, letting your muscles relax but allowing yourself to collapse.

What actually happens anatomically when you are slouching?

When slouching, the spine is curved unnaturally (your centre of gravity is displaced) forces accumulate on specific areas, neck or middle or lower areas. Continue reading
